When I was trying to setup Python for the first time I found it pretty confusing. That motivated me to create this guide so that you can learn how to install Python 3 on your mac OS. Python is one of the most versatile (if not the most) programming languages and developing your skills in Python is a necessary aspect of becoming a machine learning practitioner. I have tried to make this guide as comprehensive as I can, however, you may still run into some issues or errors. Fret not. Errors are your friend. Copy and Paste the error into Google Search and try and work out what it means.
At the time of writing this post, I don’t have a guide for Windows or Linux, however there are a number of great resources online such as this guide from Real Python which you can use and follow along.
Getting Started
You will need a computer with mac OS installed and access to the internet. You may not be able to install Python on a work laptop as your privileges may be restricted. If you have admin access then you are ready to go!
Opening The Terminal
The Terminal will seem intimidating at first. Don’t worry. You will get used to it. The Terminal is an application that comes installed with your mac. You can find it by searching for Terminal using spotlight. Simply double click to open. What you see might look slightly different to mine. Sometimes the background is white.

If you see something like this that means you have Python 2 installed on your mac.
Now check and see if you have Python 3 already installed by typing:

Install Xcode
You might be wondering, what is Xcode and what does it have to do with installing Python? When I started learning Python this was one of the things that used to constantly trip me up. I needed to install Y and Z to make X work.
Xcode is an integrated development environment (IDE) that is comprised of software development tools for your mac. Again, if you are unsure of what an IDE is, don’t worry. IDEs help programmers develop code faster and that’s all you need to know for now.
You may have Xcode installed already. To check, type the following in your Terminal window:
If you receive the following output, then Xcode is installed:
If you received an error, then you will need to install Xcode from the App Store and accept the default options.
Return to your Terminal window, after you install Xcode. Next, you’ll need to install Xcode’s separate Command Line Tools app, which you can do by typing:
After you finish installing Xcode and its Command Line Tools app, you are now ready to install the package manager Homebrew.

Your Terminal output may output some warnings. Don’t worry. They are just used to help the Homebrew maintainers with debugging if you file an issue. You are now ready to install Python 3.

We are now almost there. You can use Homebrew to search for everything you can install with the
brew search
command, but to if you want a shorter list, you can instead search for just the available Python-related packages or modules:The Terminal will output a list of what you can install which might look something like this:
Python 3 will be among the items on the list. You can go ahead and install it by typing in the following:

The Terminal window will give you feedback regarding the installation process of Python 3, it may take a few minutes before installation is complete.

Along with Python 3, Homebrew will install pip, setuptools and wheel.
Pip is a package manager which is used to install Python packages. It is something you will come across over and over again. Setuptools facilitates packaging Python projects, and wheel is a built-package format for Python that can speed up your software production by reducing the number of times you need to compile. The installation process is similar to most applications on a mac and you can accept all the defaults. I recently did this when I wanted to re-install Python and clear all versions from my computer. I almost always use a virtual environment when working with Python so I try and upgrade the root installation of Python every now and then. To update your version of Python 3, you can first update Homebrew and then update Python:
